For our mother's birthday a year or so ago, my siblings and I bought her the Deluxe DIY Cheese Kit from The Urban Cheesecraft on Etsy. And, if you want to try making your own cheese, you definitely have to purchase a kit from The Urban Cheesecraft. The kit comes with everything you need, minus the milk, but her detailed instructions are very easy to follow. Plus, you can make a ton of cheese with her kits. The Deluxe kit comes with directions for six different cheeses, and 30 batches! The shop owner is so sweet, she even hand wrote a quote that I chose and tied the tag to the box. It's the little things, right?
This past Mother's Day, we finally put the kit to use. While my brother was smoking a turkey, my father was doing yard work, and my mother and brother-in-law were setting up the porch furniture, my sister and I made mozzarella. It was such a fun process, and took maybe 30 minutes tops. The end result was delicious; the guys couldn't believe that it actually tasted like mozzarella cheese!
The process was simple too, you mix rennet with water, and another ingredient that the kit comes with, boil the milk with one of the mixtures, add the next, let the curds separate from the whey, heat up the curds, stretch the cheese, and voila!
Check out our pictures of the process below.
